Sefer Center Conference Held in Moscow

On January 29-31, the Moscow Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization ‘Sefer’ held the XIX International Jewish Studies Conference in Moscow. EAJC traditionally supported the center in holding this annual forum. The EAJC Secretary General, Chairman of the Sefer Center Academic, Professor Michael Chlenov and the Director of the Sefer Center, EAJC General Council member Victoria Mochalova led the opening ceremony of the conference. Chlenov also spoke at the first plenary meeting with a report titled: “The Ethnic Component of Jewish Civilization.”

For three days, experts in Jewish studies disciplines from many countries shared their knowledge in plenary and regular meetings. Some of the section titles included: “Judaism and Jewish Thought,” “Studying and Teaching the Hebrew Language,” “The Society of Israel Before New Challenges,” “Biblical Studies,” “The Jewish Identity,” “Applied Jewish Studies.” New academic books, projects, and programs were presented at the conference.

As the EAJC Secretary, Professor Michael Chlenov noted, “Scholarship is one of the few areas of Jewish life which is developing consecutively, dynamically, in breadth and depth. As a scholar, I certainly laud it! It is most important that young, truly interested and curious people are a part of this work. This means that we are passing on our knowledge, and that what we have gathered will not be lost. On my part, I estimate that the EAJC will work more actively to support and develop scholarly interested to study and preserve the Jewish heritage.”
