It has recently become known that the police have arrested the ex-key shareholder of VAB Bank, Sergei Maximov. It is not currently known which criminal case investigation the arrest is connected to, and there is no official information on what he is being accused of. Informal information seems to indicate that his arrest may be directly connected to business conflicts.

On Friday, December 23, the court has extended the pre-trial restrictions for Sergei Maximov to five days. On December 27, the court extended Maximov's detention in custody to two months' length; thus it can now be ascertained that a criminal case is to be opened.

Sergei Mazimov is a well-known patron and active participant of the Jewish life of Kyiv, Ukraine, and the entire European region. He is well known for his charitable activities, is one of the founders and the co-president of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine, and is a member of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress General Assembly.

The leadership of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress would like to express its utmost concern in connection with the arrest of the businessman that is one of the most famous leaders of the Ukrainian Jewish community, requests for him to be released on bail, and stresses the necessity of a comprehensive and unbiased full-scale investigation.
