Jewish Community and Christchurch Earthquake

As a result of the destructive earthquake which happened on the 22nd of February in New Zealand, several Christchurch Israelis went missing. Around 200 people lived in Christchurch, and five right now are considered missing, and are probably under the rubble, which is being constantly taken apart by the rescue workers. There are no registered dead among the local Jewish community.
Members of the Israeli volunteer organization ZAKA have been working on the spot of the tragedy since the 24th of February. The Chairman of the ZAKA Trustee Board is Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) First Vice President Michael Mirilashvili, and the funds collected by a number of EAJC events for this organization have allowed it to radically widen the sphere of its activity.
The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress is carefully reviewing the situation through its representatives on the spot, since the Jewish community of New Zealand has been a part of the EAJC since 2002. EAJC President Alexander Mashkevich is currently reviewing the possibility to provide finanfcial aid necessary to restore the city after the tragedy.
