On the 19th of September, during the official visit of the important Singapore politician, father of the "Singapore economic miracle" Lee Kuan Yew, a specially organized meeting with EAJC President Alexander Mashkevich took place.
Lee Kuan Yew was Prime Minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990. In August of 2004, he took the place of minister-mentor in the new government headed by his son Lee Hsien Loong. Under Lee Kuan Yew's leadership, Singapore has gone from a poor third-world country to being one of the richest countries in the world.
Alexander Mashkevich came to Kyiv at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov. Their meeting involved discussion of such questions as current and possible questions of Ukrainian economic development, investment climate in Ukraine, and social sphere problems. Mashkevich paid special attention to the power economy, and agreed with the Prime Minister about regular consultations on the topic.
The EAJC President and Lee Kuan Yew discussed the ecnomic mechanisms of the "Singapore miracle" during their meeting. Alexander Mashkevich noted that the Singapore Jewish community is a member of the Congress and underscored that the Jews made a significant contribution to the welfare of the country.
Before leaving Ukraine, Mashkevich said to the journalists, "Such meetings have a most positive influence not only on economic integration, but on the process of lowering international tension."
