EAJC Secretary General Comment on “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” Situation

                  01.06.2010

I am aflame with indignation at the situation that has developed around the "flotilla with humanitarian aid" that had been heading to Gaza. This thoroughly prepared and extensively publicized provocation led to the deaths of people and gave grounds for yet another wave of anti-Israeli speeches.
Indisputably, it is deeply regrettable that the forced actions of the Israeli forces led to human death. It is possible that the actions of the Israeli side were too rash and not prepared well enough, but they were a response to a planned ingression into the territorial waters of the Jewish state.
The participants of the "humanitarian event" were obviously attempting to discredit Israel at any cost, and not only did not take into account the demands of the Israeli side, which were voiced well before the event took place, not only ignored the many warnings they were given, but also put up prepared, armed resistance to the military. Unlike the Israeli side, they were obviously ready for bloodshed, as is evident from the weaponry found on board the "freedom flotilla" boat.
It is most regrettable that many countries are placing the blame solely on Israel even before an objective invesitation has been begun, once again demonstrating their hypocrisy and double-standard politics.
We expect that the global community shall evaluate objectively the possible anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli actions that have been elaborately provoked by "freedom flotilla" move, and shall be terminated most resolutely in the future.
We are certain that Israel – the only true democracy in the Middle East – can investigate what happened objectively and fairly.
We sympathize with the people of Israel, and hope that this event does not critically slow the process of regulation in the Near East.
