New Synagogue Open in Dushanbe With Aid of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress

New Synagogue Open in Dushanbe With Aid of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress

A series of holiday events took place in Dushanbe with the opening of a new synagogue, which was given to the Jewish community as a gift. The Jewish community of Tajikistan celebrates victory: the situation with the city's only synagogue, destined for demolition, has been resolved successfully.
The old synagogue, which served the community for over a hundred years and was founded back when Dushanbe was not the capital of Tajikistan, has become rather decrepit and interfered with the new country leadership plans for city-building.
After a series of consultations and meetings of the President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) Alexander Mashkevich with the President of Tasikistan Emomali Rahmon and the major businessmen of the republic, the world Jewish community received assurances from Alexander Mashkevich that the government has proposed several places for a new synagogue building to replace the old one. The atmosphere of a scandal around the synagogue dissipated, and the Jewish world, which initially perceived the decision to pull down the only synagogue as unfriendly towards the Jews, watched the situation intently.
The EAJC delegation headed by the Executive Vice-President of the EAJC Fyodor Osinin, came to Dushanbe together with the representatives of the diaspora of the Buchara Jews from various countries, and gave the leadership of the community the greetings of Alexander Mashkevich and presents from the EAJC.
In an interview, Alexander Mashkevich gave a high mark to the principled position of the leadership of Tajikistan, and the good will of the people of the Republic. In particular, he stated, "I am happy that this synagogue became part of the group of working synagogues named 'Beit Rachel,' and am happy to participate in the rebirth and development of the Jewish community of Central Asia."
