The ceremonial opening of the Alley of Friendship Between Armenia and Israel took place in Erevan in Victory park. The event was initiated by the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) and was attached to the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence.
In a personal meeting with the Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbadnyan, organized by the leaded of the Armenian Jewish community Rimma Varzhapetyan, the Secretary General of the EAJC Michael Chlenov discussed the possibility of Armenia not attending the World Conference of the United Nations on combating racism in Geneva, which, according to leading expert opinions, may take an active anti-Semitic and anti-Israel stance on a number of very important questions of international policy.
Michael Chlenov drew the attention of the leader of the MIA of Armenia to the reaction of the world at large to the position this conference takes, and the non-participation of most first-world countries in its work.
Michael Chlenov reminded that earlier the president of the EAJC Alexander Maskevich and the president of the World Jewish Congress Ronald Lauder have already made appeals to the Jewish communities of the world and to other people of good will, so that they might convince the governments of their countries not to take part in this conference.
