                  05.01.2009

The President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress Alexander Mashkevich has conducted a teleconference with the regional leaders of the Congress. The conference was in connection with the beginning of the military ground operations of the Israel Defense Force in Gaza.
Most participants of the conference were of the opinion that the actions of the Israel government were justified, because they are aimed at solving the unconditional task of defending the citizens of Israel from the unrelenting rocket fire by the extremists that control Gaza, Hamas.
Mashkevich thanked the participants for their unanimity, and stressed that that the IDF operation is a reaction to the withdrawal of Hamas from the informal cease-fire and an intensification of the bombardment of southern Israel cities. He underscored that "even the leader of the Palestinian administration, Mahmud Abbas, has placed the responsibility for the aggravation of the situation at the hands of the terroristic leadership Hamas."
The Secretary-General of the EAJC Mikhail Chlenov, in agreement with the opinion of Israel's experts, thinks that this anti-terroristic operation must overcome the inadequacy of the blockade of Gaza in stopping the militants, who continued to bombard Israel, and that Hamas has long been provoking Israel into an active confrontation.
The Chairman of the EAJC Josef Zissels noted that the minimization of losses among civilians is the main criteria for an anti-terroristic operation, which is being conducted in accordance with a practice spread around the world, which is full compliance with international law.
All of the participants announced their solidarity with the government of Israel and its people, and expressed hope that the military actions needed by Israel for self-defense will not lead to serious losses among civilians, be they Israeli or Palestinian, the latter being hostages for the extremist leadership of Hamas.
The leaders of the EAJC are counting on international support of Israel's actions in the fight against an aggressive neighbor, and are interested parties in a quick success of the operation for destroying the terrorist infrastructure.
The leaders of the EAJC have issued a special statement in connection with Israel's actions.
