On December 25, the Jewish Cultural and Educational Foundation held an event for children participating in the "Shalom Sesame" program, both of Jewish and Georgian origins, within the framework of the Jewish OJBF Book Festival. This is a joint project of the Jewish Cultural and Educational Foundation (JCEC, funded by the JDC, American Jewish Distribution Committee) and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC). The main purpose of the program is to foster tolerance among preschool children. It began its work after the Tbilisi Jewish kindergarten admitted a significant number of Georgian children whose families were forced to flee to the Georgian capital from their homes as a result of "the five-day war between Georgia, South Ossetia and Russia" this August.
The program featured songs and poems in Hebrew and Yiddish, as well as in Georgian, Russian and English. The program has been functioning since Autumn 2008. It has proved to be efficient.
The initiators of the project are the Chairman of the EAJC General Council Joseph Zissels and Director of the JCEC, member of the EAJC General Council E. Berkovich.
