Held by the Center for University teaching of Jewish civilization "Sefer" in cooperation with the Institute of Slavic studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) is holding a scientific conference called "History – Myth – Folklore in Jewish and Slavic cultural tradition".
The Sefer Centre is the leading scientific institution that coordinates activities of researchers and teachers in the sphere of Jewish Studies in the whole FSU. The Centre covers the entire region and is part of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. The Director of the Sefer Centre is Dr Victoria Mochalova, a member of the EAJC General Council, while the Chairman of the Centre's Academic Council is Professor Mikhail Chlenov, EAJC Secretary General.
Each year the Sefer Centre conducts several traditional scientific conferences, attracting considerable attention from those who follow the advancement of Jewish studies in Russian. The cardinal "big" annual conference is traditionally held during the university winter vacations in late January – early February. Additionally, the Sefer Centre conducts student conferences each summer. In December the joint conferences of Sefer and the RAS Institute of Slavic studies are usually held, with every year's discussion concerning a different aspect of cultural and historical contacts between Jews and Slavs. For example, "Holiday – Rite – Ritual in Slavic and Jewish cultural tradition", "Feast – Meal – Party in Slavic and Jewish cultural tradition", etc. According to the organizers, the conference shall include a discussion on the interaction and mutual influence of historical and mythical beliefs, the transmutation of historical situations into myth and folklore, and the transformation of historical images in texts of both the formal book-writing tradition and in folklore, all within the bounds of Jewish and Slavic cultures.
The Conference will take place in Moscow, in the RAS Presidium building.
