                  12.08.2008

Greeting President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
to the International Conference on "Yiddish culture and language"

I greet your conference on behalf of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, an organization which unites Jewish communities of 25 countries.
The first international conference dedicated to the Yiddish culture and language was held here one hundred years ago. You have gathered in Chernovtsy, a town so significant for Jewish culture. It has 6 centuries of history and it celebrates its anniversary today.
We want to specify that the Second International Conference "Yiddish language and culture" is the most important gathering among all the events dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the independent Jewish movement in the Ukraine which rose when Jewish cultural association was established in 1988.
Dozens of experts in Jewish culture and Yiddish language from all the world participate in your conference.
It is symbolic that your conference and the whole week of Jewish culture and history, the part of which it is, is held in the year of Israel's anniversary, which is beyond doubt an important year for all the Jews.
That is why the event you are honoured to participate in without any exaggeration can be considered historic and having paramount significance for modern Jewish cultural life.
I am glad I can greet your desire to consolidate the state of Yiddish language and Jewish Culture in the modern world and I wish facilitators and participants good health, commitment and success.
                  Alexander Machkevitch
President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
