Joseph Zisels, the EAJC general council chairmanJoseph Zisels, the EAJC general council chairman, took part in Mikhail Saakashvili's inauguration to the position of president of Georgia. During the celebrations, the new leader of Georgia received the address signed by Alexander Machkevich, president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) and Michael Chlenov, EAJC secretary general, and Joseph Zisels.
"The Jewish community has existed in Georgia for more then 2.5 thousand years, which explains our sincere interest to Georgia. But also, the EAJC highly appreciates Saakashvili’s attempts to cooperate with the Jewish world," said Mashkevich, commenting on Joseph Zissels' visit to Georgia.
The EAJC leader pointed out that the newly elected Georgian president visited the Tbilisi Synagogue before the elections, even though it could have hurt his electoral ratings among nationalist-minded Georgians.
"Georgia has tired of confrontation. It needs social peace... and we offer our participation in international interethnic and interfaith dialogue, which will help Caucasian people to reach a long-awaited consent," the EAJC president added.
