The statement of the Union of Byelorussian Jewish Public Associations and Communities in support of Joseph Zissels, the EAJC Gen

                  31.07.2003

                  THE STATEMENT
OF THE UNION OF BYELORUSSIAN JEWISH PUBLIC ASSOCIATIONS AND COMMUNITIES

After considering the “Declaration” made by the Council of Leaders of All-Ukrainian (Major) Jewish Organizations of June 24, 2003 the Union of Byelorussian Jewish Public Associations and Communities (UBJOC) expresses its astonishment with the fact of the publication. The contents of the “Declaration” are unsubstantiated and unconfirmed, it discredits the Jewish leaders who signed it and adversely affects Jewish movement both in Ukraine and internationally. In our opinion, the form of the declaration is an unacceptable way to settle rising conflicts between Jewish organizations and their leaders. The UBJOC considers such declarations provocative – they bear the threat of further fragmenting the Ukrainian Jewish community. We appeal to the parties involved in the conflict with one request: Please compromise, and refrain from taking thoughtless steps. Byelorussian Jewish community is ready to take conciliator’s part in settling the conflict.

The Union of Byelorussian Jewish Public Associations and Communities including almost 100 Jewish organizations has cooperated with the organizations that Joseph Zissels represents – the VAAD of Ukraine, the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, the Congress of National Minorities of Ukraine, the Zionist Federation of Ukraine for a long time. The Union of Byelorussian Jewish Public Associations and Communities intends to continue cooperation with Mr. Joseph Zissels and the aforenamed organizations for the sake of the Ukrainian and Byelorussian Jewish communities and all Jews, around the world.

On behalf of the UBJOC Presidential Council,

                  Leonid Levin, the UBJOC, President
