Jews travel to Poland for symbolic solidarity march
05.12.2018, Holocaust With the rise of nationalist sentiment in many parts of Europe, Jewish communities here are facing renewed threats and challenges. Against a backdrop of rising concern about the political climate in Eastern Europe, Warsaw’s Reform Rabbi Dr. Walter Rothschild will lead an international group of travelers on a Jewish heritage tour of Poland this coming spring, culminating in the March of the Living on May 2, 2019.
Established in 1988, the annual March of the Living is a symbolic walk from Auschwitz to Birkenau on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Jews from around the world come together in this act of commemoration, defiantly demonstrating the perseverance of Judaism in the face of past and current struggles.
Rabbi Rothschild’s journey of discovery invites participants to revisit a millennium of Jewish history in Poland. Once a booming center of Jewish culture, Poland’s Jewish community is currently experiencing a renaissance. The tour, titled Explore Poland 2019: A Millennium of Jewish Heritage, is intended to reveal not only the depths of devastation in Poland’s Jewish past, but also the heights of joy inherent in the country’s Jewish rebirth.
“In some respects it is still a new country born from a traumatic past and a new liberation less than thirty years ago. So, there is a lot to explore and a lot to think about. We won‘t do it all, but we will make a start,” said Rothschild
The tour begins on April 28, 2019 in Warsaw, Poland, and ends on May 5, 2019 in Krakow, Poland.
Explore Poland 2019 is organized by Milk & Honey Tours, a tour operator based in Berlin, Germany. Founded in 2001, Milk & Honey Tours is specialized in Jewish heritage tours in Europe and beyond.
