Chelsea football club threatens its fans with sanctions over anti-Semitic song
18.09.2017, Anti-Semitism The Chelsea football club has threatened its fans with long-term bans after escaping punishment from the Football Association over a song which is understand to be anti-Semitic.
The new song for the club’s striker Álvaro Morata, who scored a goal against Leicester City, was sung by the majority of the club’s at the King Power Stadium.
This chant was adapted from a regularly sung mantra by Chelsea fans against their English rival team in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur, a club associated with a Jewish following.
The club said it was working with the Football Association to obtain CCTV footage of the incident in an attempt to identify the people who sang Morata's chant. The club has said that they will issue lifetime bans to anyone caught repeating the chant.
A Chelsea spokesperson said: "People that use this kind of language against others always try to argue a grey area. There is no grey area. That language used was anti-Semitic.’’
"We have a zero tolerance policy towards it. If there is evidence that season ticket holders or members took part in that, and take part in it in the future, then we will take the strongest possible action against them, which includes bans."
