For the first time, a sitting Israeli Prime Minister makes visit to South and Central America countries
11.09.2017, Israel and the World For the first time a sitting Prime Minister will visit South America and Central America as Benjamin Netanyahu departed for visits to Argentina, Colombia and Mexico.
After his journey through Latin America, Netanyahu will travel to New York, where he will address the annual United Nations General Assembly and meet with US President Donald Trump.
‘’In Argentina and Mexico, I will be joined by delegations from Israeli companies in order to develop reciprocal economic relations between the countries. We are, in effect, doing what we are doing in Asia, Africa, Australia, Eastern Europe, the eastern Mediterranean basin and around the world. This visit will strengthen our economic, security and technological ties with Latin America and it constitutes a continuation of the strengthening of Israel's international position, a systematic process that we are successfully leading,’’ said Netanyahu upon his departure.
In Bueno Aires, where he will meet with Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, the Israeli premier is to attend ceremonies to commemorate two terror attacks in the early 1990s that targeted local Jews and the Israeli embassy.
On March 17, 1992, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Israeli embassy compound, killing 29 people, including Israelis.
On July 18, 1994, 85 people were killed and dozens others wounded in the bombing of Jewish organization AMIA (Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina) building in the capital. Lebanese
Lebanese Shiite terror group Hezbollah and its sponsor Iran have been found responsible for both attacks.
