Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to cut an additional $1 million from the tmembership funds that Israel pays to the United Ntions, following the resolution passed by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee regarding the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron.

The released funds will be used for the establishment of "The Museum of the Heritage of the Jewish People in Kiryat Arba and Hebron" and to additional heritage projects related to Hebron.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization (UNESCO) passed Friday in Krakow an anti-Israel resolution for the second time in less than a week, voting to have the Tomb of the Patriarchs, in the Old City of Hebron, inscribed as a Palestinian world heritage site in danger. The resolution was put forward by the Palestinian Authority.

‘’Against UNESCO's denial of the past, Prime Minister Netanyahu is determined to present to the entire world the historic truth and the Jewish People's deep connection – of thousands of years – to Hebron,’’ Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.

"This is another delusional UNESCO decision,’’ the Israeli premier said.

‘’This time they decided that the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron is a Palestinian site, meaning that it is not Jewish, and that the site is in danger. Not a Jewish site?! Who is buried there? Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah – our patriarchs and matriarchs! And the site is in danger? It is only in those places where Israel is, such as Hebron, that freedom of religion for all is ensured,’’ Netanyahu said.

He added: ‘’In the Middle East, mosques, churches and synagogues in every other place, are being bombed – in places that are not Israel. We will continue to protect the Tomb of the Patriarchs, freedom of religion for all and the truth."

Twelve countries voted in a secret ballot in favor of the move to inscribe Hebron’s Old City, including the Tomb, as an endangered heritage site, while three opposed it. Six countries abstained. The United States, Canada and Australia, speaking as observers decried the damage to UNESCO of a one-sided resolution.

The membership of this year’s Heritage committee includes five countries with which Israel does not have diplomatic ties, and a number of others that routinely support pro-Palestinian resolutions. The 21 member states are Angola, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Croatia, Cuba, Finland, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Tunisia, Turkey, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon told AFP the Hebron motion was “fake news.”

“They are trying to rewrite Jewish history and the history of the region,” he said.

Nahshon accused the Palestinian Authority of seeking to pretend that the Tomb of the Patriarchs “is actually part of the Palestinian national heritage.”

Jewish groups condemned the UNESCO resolution.

“The UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s decision to deem the Old City of Hebron a ‘site in danger’ is the latest Palestinian attempt to exploit the UN for political manipulation, and it demonstrates a severe abuse of the emergency mechanism,’’ said World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder .

“It is disconcerting that UNESCO member states have adopted yet another cynical distortion of reality, a subversive attempt to rewrite history and deem the Old City of Hebron as a Muslim-Palestinian site alone while denying its historic and religious importance to Jews and Christians.’’

“This egregious resolution is a clear attack on Israel and will only further entrench divisions among all parties,’’ Lauder said.

“UNESCO unfortunately succumbed to the manipulations of the Palestinian Authority to politicize holy sites,” said Anti Defamation League (ADL) CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt. “The international community should be aware that efforts such as the Palestinian campaign to claim holy sites through UNESCO, not only undermines efforts to build Israeli-Palestinian trust, but reinforces the perception among Israelis and Jews around the world that the Palestinians do not recognize the Jewish connection to Israel and are not serious partners to peace.”
