French centrist pro-EU Emmanuel Macron was elected president of France Sunday with 65.5 % of the vote against 34,5 % for his extreme-right rival Marine Le Pen. The abstention was at around 25% at the runoff election. Earlier results gave Macron 65,1% of the votes.

A former outsider with little political experience, Macron has banked the presidential race on a promise to revive the country through radical pro-business measures and pro-European policies.

The 39-year-old independent becomes the youngest president of France.

His solid, intellectual performance at the latest debate of the presidential race last Wednesday showed voters that despite his young age he has the shoulders to helm an important power.

Macron has been a star student, champion of France's tech startup movement, an investment banker and economy minister — but has never held elected office.

The strong advocate of a free market and entrepreneurial spirit has called for France to focus on getting benefits from globalization rather than the protectionist policies advocated by Marine Le Pen.

In political rallies, Macron's supporters waved both the French tricolor and the European Union flags.
