Malcolm Hoenlein calls for a World Conference on anti-Semitism with prominent world leaders
21.02.2017, Anti-Semitism Malcolm Hoenlein, CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, has called for world leaders to convene a World Conference on Anti-Semitism similar to the international gatherings convened in Brussels in 1970 and 1976 to address the plight of Soviet Jews.
He made the call on the sidelines of the 43rd annual National Israel Leadership Mission of the Conference following reports of cemetery vandalism and new threats against Jews and Jewish institutions in the US. At least 10 Jewish community centers across the US were targeted with bomb threats on Monday, for the fourth time in five weeks. The threats have been called in to JCCs across the country, according to Paul Goldenberg, the director of Secure Community Network — an affiliate of the Jewish Federations of North America that advises Jewish groups and institutions on security. In January alone, 48 bomb threats were called in to Jewish community centers across the country.
Statistics also portray an even worse situation in Europe where there have been many reports of physical assaults, intimidation, harassment, and verbal and physical violence.
Israel should play a key role in helping to enlist heads of state of state for the World Conference including US President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister Theresa May, as well as other prominent world leaders from every sector including government, education, religion, culture, entertainment, law enforcement and legislators—all who influence public opinion.
‘’While Jews are the targets of anti-Semitism, it is the responsibility of all to engage in the struggle and to mobilize the resources to counter this intensifying challenge and, in particular, the use of social media to spread messages of hate and incite to violence. There must be a universal policy of zero tolerance of anti-Semitism, racism, and bigotry. Violators must know they will be held to account,’’ said Malcolm Hoenlein.
‘’A successful mobilization against anti-Semitism will strengthen the fight against all forms of bigotry. A successful World Conference will hopefully lead to replication on a national and local basis throughout the world,’’ he said.
