French extreme-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen asks French-Israelis to choose their nationality
13.02.2017, Jews and Society Days after suggesting that Jews should stop wearing the kippah as a way of defeating radical Islam, French extreme-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said that if she is elected, people holding dual French and Israeli citizenship would have to give up one of their nationalities.
She made the comment during an interview with France 2 television.
She said she would not allow French citizens to hold dual citizenship in non-European countries. "I am opposed to a policy allowing dual citizenship in non-European countries," she said.
Asked by a journalist if this would mean that French Jews living in Israel would have to give up the French citizenship, she responded in the affirmative.
"Israel is not a European Union country and doesn’t consider itself as such,” she said.
Le Pen noted that such a policy would not be about Jews but rather about French Israelis, "to whom I ask to choose their nationality."
She added later that people who would choose to give up their French citizenship would not have to leave the country. "France is perfectly capable of allowing foreigners on its soil, even for a long time, as long as they respect French laws and values."
"We rarely have issues with Israel on this subject," she said.
Marine Le Pen, who heads the extreme-right National Front party, is leading in the polls ahead of the presidential election's first round in late April with a second ballott in May.
