Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to meet with British Prime Minister Theresa May next week, the British media reported.

The talks at Downing Street on Monday will be the first time May receives Netanyahu since she took office in July. After London, the Israeli premier is expected to carry on to the US where he has been invited to the White House by US President Donald Trump on February 15.

The British leader's spokeswoman said the focus of the talks, the first meeting between the two since May took office last year, would be the bilateral relationship, including boosting trade when Britain leaves the European Union.

They will also discuss a range of international and security issues, including the conflict in Syria, the nuclear threat from Iran and the Middle East peace process, the spokeswoman said.

"I would expect the Prime Minister to set out the government’s position that we think the continued increase in settlement activity undermines trust," the spokeswoman told reporters.

"Our focus is on how do we make a two-state solution with an Israel that is safe from terrorism and a Palestinian state that is viable and sovereign, work?"

Relations between Britain and Israel turned frosty after Britain was among 14 UN Security Council members to approve last November a United Nations Security Council resolution which declared Israeli settlements “illegal”.

British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson told the parliament the UK was "closely involved" in drafting the resolution, which enraged Israel.

May’s spokeswoman said May would not retreat from the position, despite condemnation from both Israel and US President Donald Trump, because it 'undermines trust' in the faltering peace process.

Earlier this week, Israel announced plans to build 3,000 new homes in West Bank settlements, just days after Mr Netanyahu's government approved an additional 2,500 homes in the West Bank.
