An announcement is expected soon over the possibility of moving the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, in line with a pledge made by President-elect Donald Trump during the election campaign.

Trump’s spokesperson Sean Spicer told reporters who asked him about the pledge: ‘’Stay tuned, there will be a further announcement.’’

The statement was made 24 hours before the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States

Trump himself told senior Israel Hayom daily reporter Boaz Bismuth: “Of course I remember what I said about Jerusalem, you know that I am not a person who breaks promises.”

On Wednesday, at his farewell press conference, President Barack Obama warned that unilateral actions can be “explosive,” in apparent reference to Trump’s talk of moving the embassy.

Throughout the presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed he would relocate the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He declared at the AIPAC conference in March he would “move the American embassy to the eternal capital of the Jewish people, Jerusalem.”

A relocation of the embassy in Jerusalem would signify American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state.

Upon his appointment last month as the next US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, a close friend of Donald Trump, said: “I intend to work tirelessly to strengthen the unbreakable bond between our two countries and advance the cause of peace within the region, and look forward to doing this from the US embassy in Israel’s eternal capital, Jerusalem.”

However, Israeli foreign ministry officials said Friedman might work from an office in Jerusalem while the US Embassy remains in Tel Aviv.

Hundreds of Palestinians participated in demonstrations in the West Bank cities of Hebron, Ramallah and Nablus on Thursday, calling on Trump not to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem. In recent weeks, Palestinian leaders have warned of serious consequences to such a move.

Outgoing US Ambassador to Israel, Dan Shapiro, met Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the last time in his term.

A statement from Netanyahu’s office said he “thanked Shapiro for years of joint work and for his contribution to the strategic and important alliance between the US and Israel”.

Shapiro was also hosted by President Reuven Rivlin and the Knesset’s Lobby for US-Israel Relations at farewell events in his honour.

Trump’s inauguration on Friday will be attended by Israeli leaders from West Bank communities. Samaria Regional Council Head Yossi Dagan, Efrat Mayor Oded Revivi and Maale Adumim Mayor Benny Kashriel were all invited via US Congressional contacts.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has called on all Israelis to support President-elect Donald Trump.

“My fellow citizens,” Barkat said in Hebrew in a video clip, “during the last eight years the Obama administration has pushed for a building settlement freeze, he has surrendered to the Iranians and radical Islam, and has abandoned Israel to a hostile UN resolution.

“This week, president Donald Trump enters the White House,” he continued. “Let’s all welcome him together as our friend, thereby conveying a clear message to the world: Jerusalem is Israel’s undivided capital!” Barkat said by asking Israelis to “join me, and sign a letter supporting president Trump’s decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, and his decision to support the State of Israel.

‘’Let’s make the US and Israel’s relationship great again!,” Barkat said.
