Spanish city nullifies pro-BDS resolution thanks to action by pro-Israel group
02.01.2017, Israel and the World A city in Spain has nullified a resolution endorsing the anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement following legal action by a pro-Israel group.
Santa Eulalia, the second largest city on the island of Ibiza, nullified the resolution it passed earlier this year.
According to Angel Mas, President of ACOM, a pro-Israel advocacy group, “it is rare for a municipality council to cancel in a vote a resolution that it had passed only months before’’
The center-right governing Popular Party, which opposes boycott initiatives against Israel, called for a second vote, arguing that it would be unfair to focus on the democratic nation of Israel at a time when hundreds of thousands of Syrians have died in a brutal civil war among rebels, Islamists and forces loyal to the country’s dictator.
More than a dozen such BDS resolutions have been reversed over the past two years in Spain, where over 50 municipalities have endorsed BDS – more than anywhere else in Europe.
In most of the cases, the reversals came after courts ruled BDS discriminatory or local governments issued decrees against such boycotts, according to Angel Mas.
