CNN came under fire after Jake Tapper’s The Lead ran an onscreen headline that seemed to question whether Jews are people.

The headline read, “Alt-Right Founder Questions If Jews Are People.”

The segment concerned statements made over the weekend by Richard Spencer at an event of his white supremacist think tank National Policy Institute. Spencer suggested that the news media had been critical of presidential candidate Donald Trump in order to protect Jewish interests. “One wonders if these people are people at all, or instead soulless golem,” Spencer said.

The segment was aired on “The Lead,” which was being guest-hosted by Jim Sciutto.

CNN later apologized, saying in a statement concerning the banner, known as a chyron: “It was poor judgment and we very much regret it and apologize.”

Sciutto referred to Spencer’s remarks as “hate-filled garbage,” and the rest of the panel also expressed disgust after seeing a clip of Spencer’s remarks.

The Lead’s regular host, Jake Tapper, who was on vacation, criticized the chyron in several tweets.

He also tweeted in response to a complaint that the alt-right was given a platform on CNN: “they were not given a platform. The chyron was, however, unacceptable and will not happen again.”

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) for its part strongly denounced the revolting Jew-hatred displayed at Richard Spencer’s alt-right conference in Washington D.C. that saw Nazi salutes and “hail” cries for president-elect Donald Trump.

ZOA called on President-Elect Donald Trump to publicly and specifically condemn it.

‘’I am appalled and disgusted by Richard Spencer’s expression of Jew-hatred and the anti-Semitic conduct of his supporters at the alt-right conference last Saturday. While President-Elect Trump’s transition team issued a general response to the conduct, stating that the President-Elect has ‘continued to denounce racism,’ what happened demands far more from the future leader of our country. President-Elect Trump himself must speak out against this outrage,‘’ said ZOA National President Morton A. Klein.

‘’President-Elect Trump must make it crystal clear to these racists and to every American that we will not stand for anti-Semitism or any other form of bigotry,” he added.

Trump condemned on Tuesday the Washington gathering and “disavowed” the broader alt-right movement of racist and so-called “white nationalist” groups that have rallied to support his candidacy during the 2016 race.

Speaking to the New York Times, he said: ‘’Of course, I disavow and condemn them.”

Asked if he would condemn the alt-right movement generally, Trump reportedly said, “I don’t want to energize the group, and I disavow the group,” according to Mike Grynbaum, a media and politics reporter for the paper.

"I never meant to call into question the Jewish community's attachment to our common values and to the respect of the rules of the Republic," he said.
