Despite Donald Trump’s electoral campaign pledge that he would tear up the nuclear agreement with Iran, the European Union stressed on Monday its ‘’resolute commitment’’ to the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed by the world powers and Tehran in July 2015.

Trump, who was elected President last week, has raised the prospect that the United States will pull out of the agreement which he called a "disaster" and "the worst deal ever negotiated" although conceding that it would be hard to destroy a deal enshrined in a United Nations resolution.

The deal curbs Iran's nuclear program in return for the easing of Western sanctions and came after years of standoff and growing fears in the West that Iran was seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

"The European Union reiterates its resolute commitment to the JCPOA," the EU Foreign Ministers said in a statement Monday as they met in Brussels.

"The European Union is committed to support the full and effective implementation of the JCPOA including the lifting of nuclear related economic and financial sanctions and engaging with the private sector and economic operators, especially banks, to promote growth in trade and investment, " the statement added.

The EU fully supports the prompt opening of an EU delegation in Iran,’’ the statement also said.

While addressing its concerns over the human rights situation in Iran, in particular the frequent use of deth penalty, the EU statement failed to mention Iran’s anti-Semitic propaganda, Holocaust denial and repeated calls for the destruction of Israel.

The EU Foreign Ministers only expressed concern with Iran’s regional military build-up ‘’including Iran’s missile programme. ‘’The EU calls upon Iran to refrain from activities which may deepen mistrustn such as ballistic missile tests,’’ the EU said.
