US President-elect Donald Trump invites Israel's PM Netanyahu to meet him at the earliest opportunity
10.11.2016, Israel and the World US President-elect Donald Trump has invited Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to meet with him in the United States at the earliest opportunity, during a phone call.
On Wednesday, Netanyahu called Trump to congratulate him on his electoral victory earlier in the day. The invitation came during that phone call.
In a statement, Netanyahu said that Trump is a “true friend” of the State of Israel.
“I look forward to working with him to advance security, stability and peace in our region,” Netanyahu said.
“The bond between the US and Israel is based on shared values, shared interests and a shared future. I am sure that President-elect Trump and I will continue to strengthen the special alliance between Israel and the US and we will bring them to new heights,” he added.
“I am confident that President-elect Trump and I will continue to strengthen the unique alliance between our two countries and bring it to ever greater heights,” Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu assured Trump that the United States has no better ally than Israel during a phone conversation which was described as ‘’heartfelt and warm.’’
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin also congratulated Trump on his victory, which he said demonstrated that the US is the “greatest democracy.”
“There are many challenges that lie before you as president — at home and around the world. Israel, your greatest ally, stands by you as your friend and partner in turning those challenges into opportunities,” he said in a statement.
Israel’s opposition leader Isaac Herzog — chairman of the Labor Party and head of the Zionist Union bloc — wrote, “Today, [Americans] elected a new leader who demonstrated to pundits and skeptics that we are in a new age” — one characterized by the ousting of the elites.
“You accomplished the unexpected — against all odds, polls and research… This is a period of change around the world, as it will soon be in Israel, too,” Herzog said.
Israeli government ministers and political figures are pushing the US president-elect to quickly fulfill his campaign promise to overturn decades of US foreign policy and recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv.
