Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas will both address the plenary of the European Parliament in Brussels this week.

But while the two men will stay in the same hotel in the Belgian capital, no meeting has been scheduled to take place, the Israeli presidency was quoted as saying by Ynet news.

In his speech to the 751 members of the European Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, one day before Abbas’s address, President Rivlin is expected to emphasize the importance of restarting direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinins as the only way to an agreement. He will also call upon the EU to assist in bringing Israel and the Palestinians to the negotiating table.

Rivlin, who will also have talks with the EU leaders during his 4-day visit, comes in Brussels while the 28 EU Foreign Ministers are expected to welcome and endorse the French initiative to convene an international peace conference by the end of this year in the aftermath of the ministerial meeting in Paris earlier this month to which neither Israel nor the Palestinians were invited.

Israel opposes the French initiative as it believes that direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians and not an internationally imposed solution can lea to a peace agreement.
