New York Governor Cuomo announces executive order against BDS
06.06.2016, Israel and the World As thousands marched through the streets of Manhattan for the annual Celebrate Israel Parade on Sunday, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced an executive order that stops state agencies under his control from doing business with companies and organizations that support a boycott of Israel.
Wading into a delicate international issue, Mr. Cuomo set executive-branch and other state entities in opposition to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, or B.D.S., which has grown in popularity in some quarters of the United States and elsewhere, alarming Jewish leaders who fear its toll on Israel’s international image and economy.
Cuomo made the announcement in a speech to an audience including local Jewish leaders and lawmakers, describing the anti-Israel Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions (BDS) movement as an “economic attack” on the Jewish State.
“If you boycott against Israel, New York will boycott you,” he said.
‘’If you divert revenues from Israel, New York will divert revenues from you. If you sanction Israel, New York will sanction you,” he added.
The order gives the Office of General Services generous leeway to compose a list over the next six months of any groups engaged in, “boycott, divestment or sanctions actively targeting Israel, either directly or through a parent or subsidiary.” The list will be available to the public and be based on “credible information.”
The executive order is specifically aimed at BDS but it willa pply to any boycott targeting Israel.
Several US states have moved to support Israel and prevent their governments and agencies from doing business with companies or individuals that endorse the boycotts.
Similar bills have been introduced in both houses of the New York Legislature, and a Republican-sponsored bill passed the State Senate, which the party leads, in January.
