Israeli President Rivlin: Israel's relationship with the EU is 'indispensable'
11.05.2016, Israel and the World ‘’Israel's relationship with the European Union is indispensable," Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said as he addressed on Monday a Europe Day reception hosted by EU Ambassador in Israel Lars Faaborg-Andersen at his residence in Herzliya.
Diplomats and official representatives from various European countries and non-European countries attended the reception, along with local political and business leaders.
Europe Day, on May 9th, also called Schuman Day, is a celebration of peace and unity.
"Your celebration is also our celebration," Rivlin said, adding. ‘’Israel and the European Union are bound together by many ties. We share strong economic ties, which benefit both sides and the list of agreements between us is too long for me to mention here. Let me simply say to you, our largest, and most important trade partner: Israel's relationship with the European Union is indispensable."
The President expressed solidarity with the people of Europe in the face of the many challenges, "This has not been an easy year for Europe. Europe is facing internal economic challenges, a refugee crisis, and unfortunately many horrible acts of terror. In these difficult times, I wish to express Israel's solidarity with Europe. I wish to reaffirm our deep friendship with you, and commitment to the values we share."
Rivlin continued by saying that "it is true that Israel and the EU do not always fully agree on policy issues, but our cooperation and our mutual progress should not be hostages of the lack of progress between Israel and the Palestinians.’’
‘’It would be a victory for those who are not ready to accept that the only way to resolve this conflict is to build trust between peoples, " Rivlin said.
The President reiterated that in addition to strong economic ties between Israel and the EU, "we are both committed to combat racism and promote tolerance and a shared society. In the areas of the environment and clean energy, the EU and Israel cooperate on new exciting projects. That's why I say, even though we do not always agree, we will continue working hand in hand."
