Labour Member of British parliament resigns from a position after calling for Israel to be 'relocated' to the US
27.04.2016, Israel and the World A Labour Member of the British Parliament, Naz Shah, has resigned from her position as aide to shadow chancellor John McDonnell after it was revealed she called in a 2014 Facebook post for Israel to be relocated to the US.
The post, which was publicized on Monday, drew angry reactions from Jewish community leaders, who called for an “urgent” clarification.
Shah, who is Muslim, is also a member of the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee, which is investigating the rise of anti-Semitism in Britain.
Shah, a lawmaker from Bradford West, located in Yorkshire in northern England, had shared a post of a graphic in which a small silhouette of the map of Israel is laid inside the map of the United States under a headline which reads “Solution for Israel-Palestine Conflict – Relocate Israel into United States.”
The graphic adds that: “America has plenty of land to accommodate a 51st state”; “the transportation cost will be less than 3 years of defense spending,” and “Palestinians will get their land and life back.” It also says that: “Middle East will again be peaceful without foreign interference;” and “Oil prices will go down, inflation will go down, whole world will be happy.”
Shah had also published a link to a blog that compares Zionism with Al Qaeda. “European colonial values and it’s history, including Zionism, is devoid of any moral high ground and leads me to question the right of Israel to exist but yet I’m left with a reality that it does exist. In my view Zionism like Al Qaeda was and is a political movement layered with religious symbolism.”
She said she “deeply regretted” the hurt caused by her comments and accepted there was “no excuse” for the offence they caused.
She released a short statement saying the post does not “reflect my views and I apologise for any offence it has caused”.
“I made these posts at the height of the Gaza conflict in 2014, when emotions were running high around the Middle East conflict. But that is no excuse for the offence I have given, for which I unreservedly apologise,’’ she said.
In a statement, the Board of Deputies said in a statement: ““Naz Shah’s comments about relocating Israelis to the United States are simply appalling. She has since apologised and stepped down as John McDonnell’s PPS. The Board of Deputies of British Jews has sought an urgent meeting for clarification of her views on Israel and the UK Jewish community.”
Jonathan Sacerdoti, director of communications at the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, said : 'Once again the Labour Party has been revealed to have within its ranks people who express extreme prejudice towards Jewish people in their public statements. Once again the party has failed to find these statements itself, and reject those who freely and willingly express them.’’
