Spanish scraps decision to support BDS following discrimination lawsuit by pro-Israel group
24.02.2016, Israel and the World The Spanish city of Aviles has passed a motion denouncing theanti-Israel Boycott,Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement as ‘’discriminatory’’.
The city council in fact scrapped a January motion favoring BDS after pro-Israel group ACOM initiated a discrimination lawsuit against the municipality in connection with that vote, according to the local media.
ACOM called the reversal a “historic political and legal victory.”
The group noted the city agreed to advertise its unfavorable attitude toward BDS, including a statement that “the boycott threatens people’s right not to be discriminated against” as well as academic freedom, and runs counter to Spain’s law on public contracts and EU directives from 2006 on equal opportunities.
