                  07.12.2015, Jews and Society

Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Jan Jambon is to address Monday evening an annual Euro Menorah candle lighting at the Schuman roundabout, in the midst of the European Union institutions in Brussels, as he will be the guest of honour of the ceremony to celebrate Chanukah, the Jewish Festiva of Lights.

His address will follow the recent spiked terror alert in Brussels and elsewhere in Europe in the wake of the Paris terror attacks.

The event, which will be attended by ambassadors to Belgium from across the EU, is organized by the European Jewish Association (EJA).

Chanukah, which is the most popular holiday in Jewish culture, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, freedom of expression over tiranny, a message of the victory of good over evil and reedom over oppression that is of particular importance and significance in 2015.

For the EJA, which is an umbrella of various European Jewish organisations active in various domains, the lighting of the Euro Menorah on behalf of the Jewish communities of Europe ‘’represents the Jewish contribution to a more united Europe and to promote the peaceful co-existence of the many diverse communities living under the European umbrella.’’

The lighting of the Menorah, the nine-branched candelabrum, will be followed by Hassidance.
