Terrorist kills Israeli soldier and wounds several other people in Beersheba bus station attack

                  19.10.2015, Israel

An Israeli soldier was killed and several more people wounded, including two severely, in a terrorist attack at bus station in Beersheba, in southern Israel, Sunday night

Israel Police said that the attacker stabbed a soldier standing at the bus station and stole his weapon, then opening fire on the crowded bus terminal.

The soldier later died of his wounds after being rushed to the Soroka Medical Center of Beersheba.

Rescue officials said 11 people were injured in the attack, some seriously.

Among the injured was an Eritrean migrant shot and seriously wounded by responding security forces who intiatlly identified him as a terrorist.

The terrorist, identified as 21-year-old Muhanned Alukbi, was shot and killed by resoponding forces after holing up in a bathroom. Alukbi, an Israeli Arab, was a resident of the Bedouin Negev town of Hura. Family members are suspected of aiding him in the Deadly attack.

Police arrested several of his family members overnight, who are suspected of having aided him in planning and carrying out his attack.

Initially reports suggested that there had been two attackers but after an investigation police said that the Eritrean man was not involved in the attack.

The Gaza-based terror group Hamas praised the terror attack in the southern city of Beersheba tonight, in which one Israeli was killed and five were injured.

In a statement on the Hamas website, spokesman Husam Badran “blessed the quality operation” and says it confirms “the determination of the [Palestinian] people.”

In response to the attack, Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben-Dahan who is from Beersheba, called on the international community to stop the Palestinian Authority's incitement to terrorism.

"The international community must urgently act to curb the incitement and the encouragment of terrorism by the leaders of the Palestinian Authority, and not to plummet into initiatives such as internationalizing Temple Mount, which only encourage terrorism," said Ben-Dahan, referring to recent suggestions to place the site under international supervision.

Speaking of the scene of the attack, he added that "unfortunately, the terrorists don't stop. This is a stepping up from knife attacks to shooting."

The attack was the first of what had been an otherwise quiet day, following a weekend that saw seven stabbings or stabbing attempts in Jerusalem, Hebron and elsewhere, amid a spate of attacks by Palestinians terrorists.

Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon on Saturday assured the Israeli public that while combating Palestinian violence would take time and effort, authorities were working tirelessly to prevent terrorist activities in the West Bank and across the country.

“The fight against terrorism requires determination, patience and judgment,” Yaalon said.

“IDF forces, Israel Police and the Shin Bet security service have made every effort to thwart and prevent terrorist attacks. The State of Israel is employing a heavy hand against the terrorists and their dispatchers, whether they are associated with groups or [acting] as individuals,” the minister added.

Since October 1, eight Israelis have been killed and dozens injured in at least 30 separate stabbing or attempted stabbing attacks by Palestinian assailants.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel was acting in a systematic manner against the wave of terrorism through the reinforcement of security forces, and taking both deterrent and punitive steps.

“Today we will begin taking steps against incitement, including against the Islamic Movement, which is the foremost inciters,” he said, adding that Israel will take action against that group's source of funding. The security cabinet was expected to meet later on Sunday to discuss this matter.

‘’Israel is not the problem at the Temple Mount, but rather the solution, Netanyahu said at Sunday’s cabinet meeting, rebuffing a French proposal to place international observers at the holy site.

“We are preserving the status quo,” he said. “We are the only ones doing that, and will continue to do this responsibly and seriously.”

He reiterated what he has been saying for weeks, that the only change in the status quo has been efforts organized by the Israeli Islamic Movement and other “outside forces” to bring explosives into the mosques on the site and “attack Jews from them.”

This is the change in the status quo that has caused all the events there over the last year, he said.

Netanyahu said that Israel rejected the French proposal put forward at the UN Security Council, and pointed out that it did not mention Palestinian incitement or terror.

There is, however, a call in the proposal to “internationalize the holy sites.”

Netanyahu said that everyone has seen what happens to holy sites in the the Middle East, “what happened in Palmyra in Syria, what happened in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere where Muslim extremists destroy each other's mosques, to say nothing about Christian, Jewish and heritage sites.”
