British Jewish organization to help elderly Jews in Ukraine
15.07.2015, Community Life The main task of the COPE charitable program the British organization World Jewish Relief is to aid elderly people in Ukraine.
“The ongoing crisis in Ukraine affects the lives of thousands of people. The elderly Jewish population of Ukraine, many of whom we support, is especially vulnerable. For many the crisis causes great unrest, stress and lack of confidence in the future. Our program provides emotional well-being and helps to make their lives better,” the organization’s press-release reads.
Initially, the COPE program (Catalyzing Older People’s Empowerment) was focused on combating loneliness among elderly Jews in Ukraine. Soon the program, in which 1200 people participate, will turn three. Hundreds of young volunteers are involved in the initiative and have spent time with elderly isolated people. Additionally, a special model for looking after especially needy elderly people at home has been developed.
In May, representatives of the COPE program held a special seminar in Kiev, where they shared their experience of looking after elderly people with local volunteers.
