Europe’s only repository for damages Torah scrolls to be created in Dnepropetrovsk
17.06.2015, Community Life The Dnepropetrovsk National Sofer Center plans to create a special repository for damaged Torah scrolls, the like of which does not exist anywhere in Europe.
The scrolls are currently kept in ordinary room conditions at the National Sofer Center. They are restored by center employees when possible – as soon as they find sponsors.
“There are many scrolls which are damaged or only preserved in fragments, and they all need to be kept until we find the opportunity to restore them. They need to be stored in certain conditions, in order to avoid further damage. We have decided to build a special repository for scrolls at our center, the like of which does not exist on our continent. These repositories exist in Israel, of course, but there have not yet been any in Europe,” said the chief sofer Reuven Margolin.
The repository will have a micro-climatic device which can maintain humidity and temperature at the necessary level, and also decontaminate and purify the air. It will not only contain scrolls from the center, but also ones that are sent here for diagnosis or storage.
