‘’What is important at this stage is not to isolate Israel,’’ said Italian MEP Fulvio Martusciello, President of the European Parliament delegation for relations with Israel, in a declaration made after Israel's general elections which saw a clear victory of Benjamin Netanyhu’s Likud party.
‘’The results of the vote have left a country divided in two. We do have to acknowledge Netanyahu's comeback, he was right when he decided to have early elections,’’ he said.
‘’The Knesset is widely renewed after these elections and now it is Europe's turn to contribute. What is important at this stage is not to isolate Israel. It is on the isolation of Israel that the religious fanaticism grows,’’ Martusciello, a member of Forza Italia party, stressed.
He concluded: ‘’We do represent a democracy and as such we have to recognize the results of the elections. It is now Israel's responsibility to weave the thread that should link it to Europe and we, as European Union, are ready to play our role.’’
