Belgian government to fund reinforced security measures around Jewish communty
20.06.2014, Jews and Society The Belgian federal government will cover the cost of the security of Jewish institutions in Belgium following the attack at Jewish mueum I,n Brussels in which four people were killed on May 24.
Since the attack, security has been reinforced around the sites linked to the Jewish community, associations, places of worship and shops.
Belgian daily Le Soir amounted the cost to secure these places between 2 and 3 million euros (around $4 millio).
According to the newspaper, security will continue to be at the highest level and will remain so for the schools, for several months. Police districts will support static monitoring as well as technical means of prevention.
The Jewish community of Belgium had asked the government as a ''priority'' a financial contribution to ensure its security, "as it is done in France or the United Kingdom.
The president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), Ronald Lauder, himself came to Brussels earlier this month to support the Jewish community of Belgium and request security measures.
"Security forces in Europe must be strengthened considerably because they are not yet able to" deal with the "general movement of radicalism" that grows in Europe, he stressed during a press conference.
About 40,000 Jews live in Belgium.
The city of Amsterdam has also announced that it would enhance the security of its Jewish schools and synagogues.
"We looked at what could be the consequences for the threat and risks incurred by the Amsterdam Jewish community," said Mayor Eberhart van der Laan.
The municipality refused to say what action it intends to take or what places she had monitored, merely indicating that the measures concerned the "Jewish institutions" in Amsterdam. About 25,000 Jews live in Amsterdam, a city with a dozen synagogues and many Jewish schools.
Amsterdam is also home to the famous Anne Frank museum, the Jewish teenager whose diary written during the Second World War has been viewed worldwide.
