World Jewish Congress-US Calls on United States not to recognize Fatah-Hamas government

                  03.06.2014, Israel and the World

In light of reports that the US government plans to establish ties to work with the Fatah and Hamas technocratic government, World Jewish Congress-United States called on the American government to withhold recognition and funding of the Palestinian unity government constructed from Fatah and Hamas.
“A government consisting of a combination of Fatah and Hamas, an unrelenting terrorist organization, cannot in any way be countenanced as long as Hamas does not recognize the state of Israel, does not renounce violence, and does not abide by the previous diplomatic agreements, as stated by the Quartet, ” said Rabbi Joel Meyers, Chair, WJC-US. “This construct threatens the chances for peace.”
“Hamas continues to hold fast to its philosophy which includes the denial of Israel’s right to exist, manifested by the continuous barrage of rockets that emanates from Gaza into Israel, attacking innocent civilians. It is tragic that the Palestinian Authority, under President Abbas, which has received aid from the United States and from the international community for so long in order to strengthen and promote its development, has decided to unite with those who have negated any efforts to establish peace with Israel. This “unity” government with Hamas renders it unqualified to receive any US aid or support,” said Meyers.
“The United States should continue to insist that the Palestinian Authority return to direct negotiations with Israel, as done in the past, in accordance with United Nations resolutions. Any partnership made with a terrorist organization by the Palestinian Authority dashes hopes for a peaceful, stable and prosperous future for both Palestinians and Israelis,” added Meyers.
