Two Israeli journalists attacked by Palestinian mob near Ramallah
16.05.2014, Israel Two Israeli journalists were attacked during a riot in Beitunia near Ramallah on Friday afternoon and suffered light injuries, according to the IDF Spokesperson's Office.
The two journalists were beaten by masked men and suffered bruising before being evacuated from the area by Palestinian Authority security forces, and transferred to the custody of the IDF Civil Administration.
The journalists were covering the riots outside of Ofer Prison as mourners in Ramallah held funerals for two Palestinian youths, who were killed on Thursday during protests to mark Nakba Day.
One of the journalists was Walla Arab affairs analyst Avi Issacharoff, who tweeted this following the incident:
Was attacked and beaten by Palestinian mob. Near Ramallah. Just because I'm an Israeli journalist.
Issacharoff tweeted before the attack that there were around 100 protesters in the area and that tear gas was being used by security forces as a crowd dispersal method.
The second victim was a Walla photographer, whose name has not yet been made public.
The Palestinian Journalists' Association condemned the attack on the two Israelis.
One Palestinian protester was also lightly injured after being hit by a rubber bullet, according to Israel Radio.
Following the attack, West Bank security coordinator Yoav Mordechai told head of Palestinian general intelligence Majid Faraj that the incident was further proof of the importance of coordination between the two sides, Israel Radio reported.
Palestinian youths and IDF forces clashed with relative restraint in Nablus and near the Kalandiya checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ramallah earlier on Friday, Channel 10 reported.
Muslim worshipers hurled stones at Israeli police forces at the Temple Mount following weekly Friday morning prayers. No injuries or damage were reported.
Police said six Arab youths were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident. Authorities said the compound had subsequently resumed order.
The two 17-year-old Palestinian youths were fatally shot when scores of Palestinian demonstrators attacked IDF soldiers with stones at a protest near the Ofer Prison, located between Ramallah and the Givat Ze’ev settlement.
