Erekat: Israel actively sabotaged peace talks, trying to consolidate apartheid regime
29.04.2014, Israel Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat accused Israel of actively sabotaging peace talks, as the nine-month period for US-mediated negotiations which began in July came to an end on Tuesday.
"Unfortunately, Israel never gave the negotiations a chance to succeed," the Bethlehem-based Ma'an News Agency quoted Erekat as saying.
"To build settlements in occupied land, kill Palestinians and demolish hundreds of Palestinian homes is certainly not the behavior of a government that wants to end occupation but of a government that wants to turn occupation into annexation," he charged.
Erekat claimed that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had taken advantage of the nine-month negotiating period to "consolidate [Israel's] Apartheid regime."
On the occasion of the deadline for talks, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said that there can be no peace with Israel without first defining the borders of a future Palestinian state.
AFP quoted Abbas as saying Tuesday, "Since the creation of Israel, nobody knows what the borders are. We are determined to know our borders and theirs, without that there will be no peace," he said.
Abbas continued by laying out his conditions for the peace talks to restart.
"If we want to extend the negotiations there has to be a release of prisoners ... a settlement freeze, and a discussion of maps and borders for three months during which there must be a complete halt to settlement activity," he announced.
