A resident of Ixelles, a municipality in Brussels, had the unpleasant surprise to find while shopping this week in a supermarket of the Delhaize chain a carnival costume from the Funny Fashion brand which reproduces the striped uniforms of the Nazi extermination camps, the fashion magazine Elle Belgium reported on its website.
Challenged by the shocked client, the manager of the supermarket bravely apologized but asked the client ‘’not to stick to this.’’
Contacted by the Belgian League Against Anti-Semitism (LBCA), the supermarket chain regretted the incident, explained that it happened ''beyond its control'' and that ''as soon as this was noticed, Delhaize decided to immediately withdraw the costume from all its stores.''
''In the future Delhaize is committed to strengthening its monitoring procedures,'' it said in a communiqué.
