A Twitter account belonging to the Dutch branch of BDS, the anti-Israel movement (‘Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions’) is using an image of Anne Frank dressed in a red keffiyeh in order to promote its political aims, Israel's daily Maariv reported.
The active Twitter page @BDS Amsterdam is refreshed every few hours. A tweet from this week enlightened readers as to, “the updated list of all 2013 Israeli cultural boycott events for 2013.”
The posting also included information about all the artists who had decided to not perform in Israel over the last year as a protest against Israel.
Reacting to the backlash provoked by the cynical use of Anne Frank’s image, the Twitter account said : “Boycotts and sanctions against Israel are how we respond to war criminals who use the Holocaust to justify their crimes.” It added : ”Gaza is full of Anne Franks. Gaza is the world’s biggest concentration camp.”
Anne Frank, who lived in Amsterdam during WWII, is one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust and author of a diary which has been translated in many languages.
