World Jewish Congress leadership condemns Islamist terror attack in Russia
23.10.2013, Jews and Society At the initiative of the Russian Jewish Congress, the Executive Committee of the World Jewish Congress today issued a strong condemnation of the terrorist attack on a bus in the Russian city of Volgograd on Monday.
"We express deep sadness at the death of six innocent persons who became victims of a suicide bomber who acted on the orders of radical Islamists," the international Jewish leaders said in a resolution adopted at their meeting in Jerusalem. The WJC also expressed "the solidarity of world Jewry with the people and government of Russia" and called "for all religious leaders to engage in efforts to prevent the young generation from being drawn into the activities of terrorists."
On Monday afternoon, a female suicide bomber set off explosives on a regular bus driving on a highway in Volgograd, killing six and injuring 30 people, some of them seriously. Officials believe the woman was from Dagestan in the North Caucasus and was the partner of an Islamist militant. An Islamist insurgency in the northern Caucasus region has led to many attacks in recent years.
