British Jewry leads tributes to Royal heir as Israel heralds ‘the most democratic country on earth’

On Tuesday, one day after his birth, the as-yet-unnamed Prince of Cambridge made his worldwide debut, as parents Kate Middleton and Prince William emerged outside St. Mary's Hospital in London.

Outgoing British Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks led the Jewish community in greeting news of the birth of a royal baby Monday, as he offered “blessings, good health, and joy” to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who delivered an as-yet unnamed baby boy, the third in line to the British throne in London.
Wishing the couple, whose wedding itself captured the imagination of Diaspora Jewry and beyond two years ago, the traditional “Mazal Tov”, his message was echoed by myriad other communal groups.
A press release circulated by the Duke and Duchess’ official Kensington Palace residence confirmed that the royal heir was born at 4.24pm Monday, weighing in a 8 pounds, 6 ounces, after his mother had admitted herself to the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington in the early hours of that morning.
Vivian Wineman, President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, issued a statement expressing “a hearty Mazal Tov (congratulations) to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of a baby boy”. “We are delighted for them, and indeed the whole Royal Family, and wish them all the best in the future,” he added.
The Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations added in an open greeting to Prince William and Catherine: "It gives us much pleasure to offer our heartiest congratulations on the birth of your son. Our wishes are for your Royal Highnesses’ good health, long life and prosperity and to all the Royal Family.” “May the Almighty grant the newborn Royal Prince discerning leadership and wise counsel for the future,” concluded the message.
Israel was also at the forefront of the congratulatory messages, as Israeli President Shimon Peres sent a letter of congratulations Tuesday to the royal couple, along with a gift of a baby suit embroidered with the message “From Israel with Love”. In the letter, posted to his official website, Peres expressed “our tremendous joy at the birth of your child – a royal baby, born in the most democratic country on earth”. The greetings, which he offered on behalf of all Israelis, concluded: “From Jerusalem, we pray for his health, his future, and his peace. May he live to a hundred and twenty years, and I know that the whole Jewish nation joins me in wishing the entire royal family a hearty Mazal Tov.”
The Israeli statesman issued a statement to accompany his greeting in which he spoke of “our happiness and prayers for the young prince”. “Never in my life did I see the people of the world so united in happiness. It was a demonstration of where royalty helps democracy and where the people have shown what a true democracy is. The streets were full and smiles were on everybody’s face,” he continued.
“I am happy to see the whole world so happy with the birth of this young boy. I am 90 years old, so I saw his father when he was a young boy and now I hope we shall see this newly born prince, doing his job in the most democratic and royal manner. The world became richer with this event. God bless the Queen, From Jerusalem Mazal Tov,” he concluded.
In a more succinct message, Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement of his own Monday wishing “Mazal Tov to the queen, Prince Charles, the happy couple and the Kingdom’s residents from all of Israel’s citizens”.
