Shots were fired overnight Tuesday at an Israeli army patrol in the Golan Heights, damaging a military vehicle but causing no injuries.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) returned precise fire at the source of the gunfire, an IDF spokesperson said, reporting a direct hit.
The spokesperson said the IDF views the recent incidents in the north with "concern" and has lodged a complaint with UNDOF, the peacekeeping force monitoring the ceasefire line between Israel and Syria.
It was the third day in a row in which shots were fired at the same location and at rougly the same time.
In the past three months there have been 12 cross-border shootings towards the Golan Heights.
Tuesday's incident however marked the first time that the Syrian army has acknowledged firing at Israeli troops across the frontier.
A statement issued Tuesday by the Syrian Armed Forces said its troops destroyed the Israeli vehicle along "with those in it." It said Israel later fired two missiles towards one of the Syrian positions in the village of Zobaydiya village, causing no casualties.
Israel recently laucnhes strikes targeting Syrian arms shipments bound for the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
