Peres in address to EU parliament in Strasbourg : ‘Call terror- terror’
13.03.2013, Israel and the World Israeli President Peres said the international community "must designate" Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, in an historic speech Tuesday before the 754 members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
"Your voice is highly respected. We appeal to you, call terror- terror and save Lebanon from terrorist madness and save the Syrian people from Iran’s proxies," Peres told the EU assembly.
The Israeli leader was welcome at the European Parliament building by European Parliament President Martin Schulz in an official state ceremony.
He said that 20 terror attempts by Hezbollah were counted all over the workld in recent times, including in India, Thailand, Georgia, South Africa, the USA, Egypt and Greece.
But the Israeli president point out to the fact that last month Bulgaria, which is a member of the European Union, reported that it had identified that the terror attack against a bus in Burgas in July 2012 was carried out by Hezbollah.
Five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian citizen died in the attack.
Recently, Cyprus, another EU country, arrested a Hezbollah terrorist planning a terror attack against Israelis.
"Hezbollah, supported by Iran, is a terror organization, not a political movement," Peres stressed, adding that the Lebanese Shiite group led by Hassan Nasrallah "has divided Lebanon politically, religiously and ethnically."
"Hezbollah is a state in the state. A private army apart from the (Lebanese) national army. It sends soldiers to support the massacre of a bloody dictator in Syria. With no authorization of the government of which it is a member," Peres added.
Regarding the Syrian conflict, the president emphasized that the Syrian chemical weapons in hands of the Syrian regime is a "terrible danger threatening the Syrian people, the entire region and even Europe."
"A way must be found to prevent the chemical weapons from falling into the wrong hands," he said, while suggesting that the Arab League should intervene to put an end to the Syrian tragedy and stop the massacre.
"The Arab League can and should form a provisional government in Syria to stop the massacre, to prevent Syria from falling to pieces. The United Nations should support the Arab League to build an Arab force in blue helmets," he said.
He said the free world "cannot stand by when a massacre is carried out by the Syrian president against his own people and his own children." "It breaks all our hearts."
"The intervention of Western forces would be perceived as a foreign interference," he said.
In his 45-minute speech to the European parliamentarians representing the citizens of 27 member states, - the first by an Israeli leader in almost three decades- President Peres also expressed optimism that peace between Israel and the Palestinians can be achieved.
"The peace process with the Palestinians already has an agreed beginning and an agreed solution : two states for two nations, an Arab state, Palestine, a Jewish state, Israel, living in peace, security and economic cooperation."
"The remaining disputed issues can and should be negotiated," he added.
The forming of a new government in Israel, expected to be announced later this week, "is an occasion to resume peace negotiations, to realize the two-state solution." "We must continue to work with the Palestinian Authority, support its economy and achieve peace."
As US President Barack Obama will be visiting Israel next week, Peres said "we are glad the US and Europe are now working together, supporting peace and rejecting terror."
But he mentioned that the greatest danger for world peace is today the Iranian regime, "a dictatorship cloaked in a religious mantle."
"Nobody threatens Iran, Iran threatens others. It endangers the independence of Arab countries, it menaces the mere existence of Israel, they deny the Holocaust and call for another one," he said.
"A nuclear bomb in the hands of an irresponsible regime is an imminent danger to the world."
"In addition to the nuclear bomb, Iran is contructing longe-range missiles equipped with nuclear warheads that can reach the far corners of the world, including Europe."
He also pointed to the human rights violations by the Iranian regime. "A clear voice must be raised against a regime that hangs people without bringing them to court, that throws journalists into prison without trial," Peres said.
The Israel's President speech was received by a long standing ovation from the MEPs.
Speaking later at a joint press conference, Martin Schulz said: "I've heard a lot of official speeches but I have seldom seen the plenary dedicate so much attention to a speech of this kind," befote thanking Peres for the messages and his visit. "It's an extraordinary day for the European Parliament," Schulz, who has met the Israeli leader several times in the past in the framework of the International Social Democrat Movement.
President Peres ended his visit in Strasbourg with a lunch for 70 leading figures in the EU parliament.
