Israel’s leaders on Saturday sent condolences to U.S. President Barack Obama over the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, which left 28 people dead, among them 20 children.
A heavily armed gunman, identified by law enforcement sources as Adam Lanza, fired what witnesses described as dozens of shots at Sandy Hook elementary school, which serves children from ages 5 to 10. It is one of the worst mass shootings in US history.
In a letter to Obama, Israeli President Shimon Peres wrote: "On behalf of the people of Israel, as friends and as parents, we stand with you today in contemplation and grief over the atrocious, incomprehensible massacre of 20 children and six adults - educators - at the Sandy Hook Elementary School."
"No experience with death can be likened to that of a parents’ loss of their child. No crime is more heinous than the killing of a child," he added.
"Our hearts are with the bereaved families of the victims, the mourning community in Newtown, Connecticut, and the people of the United States of America. Our thoughts and prayers are with you."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also sent a letter to the US President in which he wrote : "I was shocked and horrified by today's savage massacre of innocent children and adults."
"We in Israel have experienced cruel acts of slaughter and know the shock and agony they bring," he said, adding that he wishes to "express my profound grief, and that of all the people in Israel, to the families who lost their loved ones."
"I want to express my profound grief, and that of all the people in Israel, to the families that lost their loved ones. May you and the American people find the strength to overcome this unspeakable tragedy," he said.
