Santorum suspends Republican nomination bid
10.04.2012, Israel and the World Former US Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania announced Tuesday that he is suspending his bid for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination.
Santorum made the announcement at a news conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Santorum has trailed former Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts in primary contests for the delegates needed for their party’s nomination. Santorum’s home state of Pennsylvania was scheduled to hold a primary election on April 24.
Santorum, 53, presented himself in the primary as the leading voice for voters motivated by their opposition to abortion rights, gay marriage and other social issues. He also said he was better suited to take on US President Barack Obama because of his longstanding opposition to the health-care law that Obama pushed through Congress.
Romney, 65, signed a Massachusetts statute that contained a mandate to purchase health care insurance coverage similar to the one included in Obama’s law, which the Supreme Court now is weighing on constitutional grounds.
Romney has collected more than half the delegates needed for nomination at the party’s convention in August, and more than twice the number that Santorum has.
Two other candidates remain in the Republican race -- former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and Representative Ron Paul of Texas.
