EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has called on Israel to "preserve" the health of a Palestinian prisoner who has been on a hunger strike for 63 days.
Her office said said she was "following with great concern" the fate of Khader Adnan, 33, an Isamic Jihad member arrested by the Israeli army near the West Bank of Jenin "for activities that threaten regional security."
Ashton’s office added that the EU had long been concerned about Israel’s policy of administrative detention, in which Palestinians were held without formal charges being brought against them.
"Detainees have the right to be informed about the charges underlying any detention and be subject to a fair trial," the office said.
Israel’s High Court of Justice has agreed to hear a petition on Adnan’s behalf.
