Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu travels to Holland on Wednesday, one of his country's best friends in Europe.
The visit was originally planned for November but had to be postponed because of the death of Netanyahu’s father in law.
Holland supports consistently Israel in international forums, like UNESCO, where it opposed the admission of Palestine, or the UN General Assembly and often speaks in Israel's defense in internal EU meetings.
The Israeli Prime Minister is expected to thank Holland for its positions.
His talks with the Dutch leaders are expected to deal with the peace process, the Iranian issue and the strengthening of bilateral relations.
Netanyahu and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte are expected to agree to start joint cabinets meetings “to enhance cooperation,” similar to meeting Israel regularly holds with Germany, Italy and Poland.
The Israeli premier will also discuss Israel’s relations with the EU. “The Netherlands is very supportive of Israel’s desire to strengthen the Israel–EU partnership,” Mark Regev, Netanyahu’s spokesperson, told The Jerusalem Post.
The EU decided in 2008 to upgrade relations with Israel but the upgrade process was put on hold due to a lack of progress in the peace process with the Palestinians.
On Thursday, in the Dutch parliament in The Hague, Netanyahu will pay a special tribute to Johan van Hulst, a 100- year-old Dutch who saved hundreds of Jewish children during the Holocaust.
A history teacher, van Hulst was in 1973 awarded the Yad Vashem Medal of the Righteous among the Nations.
